40th Anniversary Reunion is now History!
Jackson, MS: 6/22/2003:   Reunion Hosts, Bruce & Mary Howard, made all Mississippians proud this weekend!  The 40th annual reunion was a decided success.  The Edison Walthall Hotel proved to be a wonderful facility.  Click here to see a larger version.

It was a short walk to the excellent Mississippi Department of Archives and History.  The Saturday morning presentations were well received and even extended into the afternoon after a lunch break.  While other subjects were well received, the discussions of the DNA Study were the hot topic of the day.

Reunion Committee Chair, Caroline Pace Nelson of Montgomery Alabama, announced the site of the 41st Annual Reunion will be in Montgomery, Alabama.  Further, she announced the selection of Kansas City, Missouri for the 42nd Reunion in 2005 and Atlanta, Georgia for the 43rd Reunion in 2006.  If you would like to offer to help our 2004 co-hosts, Caroline Pace Nelson and Jean Kloess, send an email to the Society Reunion Hosts.  There are many details where help is needed before, during and after the reunion.

Jane Shelton Takes the Reins!
Jackson, MS: 6/22/2003:   Upon the announced retirement of President Bob Pace of Huntsville AL, a thorough search was conducted for his successor.  As is often the case she was found right beside him in the person of First VP and Bulletin Editor, Jane Shelton of La Fayette GA.

Jane & Phil have been active PACE family researchers and in the Pace Society for many years.  They were the co-hosts of the 1998 Annual Reunion in Chattanooga TN in 1998.  We are convinced she will continue the tradition of strong leadership established by past leaders and continued for the last three (3) years by Bob Pace.

The remaining officers elected at Jackson are:  First VP Jonathan A. Pace of Marietta, GA;  Second VP Ken Daniell of Mableton, GA;  Third VP Jane Black of Conyers, GA;  Secretary Lorraine Casey of Georgiana, AL;  and, Treasurer Bruce Howard of Quitman, MS.

President, Bob Pace, Retires After Much Success
Jackson, MS: 6/22/2003:   Before the Jackson Reunion, President Bob Pace of Huntsville AL, announced his decision to retire.  During his tenure the Society made great strides in organization and advancement into the technology of the 21st century.

Under his leadership the By-Laws & Constitution were brought up-to-date and an Executive Committee was adopted and put into operation.  This may seem to be a minor point, however, in past years all business of the Society was conducted only at the annual reunions.  Already provided for in the By-Laws & Constitution, the implementation of the Executive Committee allows day-to-day business to be conducted in a more timely manner.  The Executive Committee is approved each year by the full Board of Trustees in attendance at the annual reunion.

With his encouragement and assistance the Society has established a full web presence with the development of our web home site.  With the acquisition of the pacesoceity.org domain and full web hosting facilities, a fully featured email system was implemented to allow almost instant communication between potential members, members and leadership as well as with outside vendors and contacts.

Last year he personally led the effort to investigate, approve and implement the DNA Study currently underway

Newly elected President, Jane Shelton of La Fayette GA, expressed the feelings of many when she thanked Bob and Dee for their combined efforts on behalf of the Pace Society of America.

Well Done, Bob!!!

DNA Committee Progress Report
Kirkwood, Missouri: 2/28/2003:   DNA Study Committee Chair, Roy W. Johnson, submitted the following Committee Report.

The DNA study is progressing quite well.  To-date, there are nineteen (19) applicants including two (2) from the United Kingdom!!!!  Fourteen (14) results have been received and posted.  While some trends are beginning to emerge, we still hope for more PACE men with documented lineages to strength the study.

A new phase of the project was also initiated.  Details are being worked out to fund the tests for interested, qualified parties with financial need.  If you are interested in either donating funds, paying for an individual or would like to apply to participate but are unable to supply the necessary funds contact the DNA Committee.  Participation in the effort will be on a first come, first served basis.

DNA Committee Progress Report
Kirkwood, Missouri: 12/5/2002:   DNA Study Committee Chair, Roy W. Johnson, submitted the following initial Committee Report.

The DNA study is progressing quite well toward its initial goal.  There are two applicants from the John of Middlesex line and three from the Richard of Jamestown line.  Our good luck is that they are all from branches which diverged at the earliest possible time, which makes the study more accurate.  There is at least one more potential applicant who does not have computer access; I have mailed materials.  He is believed to be from the John of Middlesex line.

Because most of the above applicants selected the 25-marker test, our qualifying goal of $600 has been met.

As for funding, I have a file of people willing to contribute to funding, but no one so far has mentioned needing funding.  It seems to me we need to know if anyone wants to apply for funding before we do any collecting.  We are moving quite nicely without it.  The submissions to date should be enough to satisfy objective #1 regarding the John/Richard lines.

Executive Committee Approves PACE Surname DNA Project
Huntsville Alabama: 11/25/2002:   President, Robert Evans Pace, JR announced today that the Executive Committee has approved a new project to use DNA to further PACE surname research.  The initial phase will be to determine a possible link between Richard PACE of Jamestown VA and John PACE of Middlesex VA.

The complete text of the President's message follows.

President's DNA Announcement:

In the recent past there has been more and more activity in the use of DNA in the field of genealogy.  In recognition of the importance of this new technology I appointed a committee to look into whether the Pace Society of America should embark on DNA studies.  I also asked the committee to identify the initial effort if they recommended the Society undertake such a project.  The committee has completed its study and submitted a project plan for the initial entry into this field.

The PSA Executive Committee, acting under the authority of the Board of Trustees, has unanimously approved the project.  Details of the approved project can be found on the Pace Society DNA web site and in the Winter issue of the PSA Bulletin.  In summary the decision is that:

  1. The Society should begin to use DNA testing as a genealogy tool.
  2. The initial project should be to determine if there is a relationship between Richard Pace of Jamestown and John Pace of Middlesex County, VA.
  3. Each participant in this initial project will pay his own fees.

Needless to say the PSA leadership is excited about the opportunities that may be available when the application of DNA testing to the field of genealogy is fully understood and exploited.  We think the Society should be a part of the application of this new technology.

Bulletin Editor, Diane Rich Hinshaw, Retires
After over twenty (20) years of active service, Diane Rich Hinshaw of Shawnee Mission, KS has retired as the Society Bulletin Editor.  Her enumerable contributions over this period have seen the Bulletin almost triple in size.  During the last few years with the assistance of Bulletin Committee Chairman, Jack Pace of Williamsburg VA, the quality of the presentation and contents has improved greatly.

As stated by Jack Pace in the new Bulletin: "Diane's Editor duties began with Issue #73, September 1985 and she maintained the position through Issue #138, Winter 2001, sixty-six issues of the Bulletin.  When one considers Diane's contribution it must be noted that she has published over 53% of the total Pace Society Bulletin which have been published."

President, Bob Pace of Huntsville, AL named Diane Bulletin Editor Emeritus.  In this capacity she will continue to share her experience and advice with the committee.  Phil & Jane Shelton, Lafayette GA, have accepted the job as Co-Editors of the Bulletin.  If you have items of interest to share in the Bulletin or would like to offer to help in the production, send an email to the Society Bulletin Editor.
