Middlesex County VA-Staffordshire England Paces
Explanation: One major branch of US Paces trace their ancestry to John Pace of Middlesex County, VA. The first record of John is his purchase of land in Middlesex County in 1693. There is ample documentation of the line from there to the present, but no previous documentation of John. It was previously thought that he might be a descendent of Richard Pace of Jamestown, the first known Pace in America.
So the first goal of the study was to determine whether two major branches of American Paces could be related: (1) The John Pace of Middlesex County, VA line, and (2) the Paces of North Carolina line believed to be descended from Richard Pace of Jamestown. This purpose has been realized. DNA results are so different that it is virtually impossible for these two groups to be closely related.
John of M Paces (group 2 in the chart) are more likely related to British Paces of Shropshire-Staffordshire background. They are of a different haplogroup (Haplogroup I), which usually indicates Viking or Anglo-Saxon origin. Evidence is perfect 25/25 and 35/37 DNA matches with Gordon Pace of Canada. Circumstantial evidence shows that John of Middlesex is probably John Pace b. 1665, Shropshire, England, brother to Gordon's ancestor George Pace. For evidence of this relationship, click to see the chart.
DNA shows the other large group of Paces (group 3) to be Haplogroup R1b1, the general European group that is more common. Those in this group are the probable descendents of Richard Pace of Jamestown.
These DNA results seem to indicate two totally different lines of Paces in England whose ancestors are found in early Virginia.
Participant number 6281 was the first person to submit DNA for the test. He has an apparently accurate documentary record to John of Middlesex through John Junior, so he was designated as Group 1, under the assumption that other Paces of this line would be a match. It turned out that his DNA did not match the others in this group or any other Pace in the study, but it was too late to change the group numbering system. He is included here due to his paper record to John.
Chart explanation: Top row – convenience markers or loci. Next row- Technical DNA designations (DYS). To see lineages of all donors click here. For specific donor click the kit number.
Marker colors: FTDNA shows some markers in red to indicate a higher frequency of mutation in these alleles. This can help in dividing groups into sub groups. John of Middlesex Paces have not shown division into sub-groups.
Individual differences from the majority in a group are marked in green.
Blue cells =
Paces with paper records tracing to John of Middlesex; pink = Gordon Pace of
Canada, with proven descent from Staffordshire, England, Paces. (See also
Gordon's John of Middlesex page
on his web site); other lines matching but not tracing to John of M in gray.
