names of living persons - are concealed
unless the donor requests otherwise.

Brief explanation:
These are the main groups of Paces,
according to the DNA evidence

  1. Persons related to or descended from John Pace of Middlesex County, VA. (immediately below)

  2. Descendents of Richard, James, and John Pace of North Carolina (John b. 1732), first believed to be the sons of "Richard Pace II", grandson of Richard of Jamestown. Recent discussion on Pace mailing list suggests the above Richard may be the son of a George Pace (Richard>George>"Richard II">George).

DNA and other evidence has divided this line into  two sub-groups, 3a and 3b.   DNA evidence and analysis by FTDNA indicate that group 3b and 3a have a common ancestor within the time span for Richard of Jamestown.

Group 3a has the following sub groups
(with some individuals not matching a group)

Richard Pace b. ca 1699 + Elizabeth Cain
      John Pace + Ann Russell
      William Pace + Ruth Lambert

Group 3b has the following sub groups
(again with some individuals not matching a group)

John Pace + Sarah (Originally identified as Burgh but this is questionable)
Jesse Pace descendents (not proven but strong circumstantial evidence)
      William Pace + Sicely Walker

  3. Descendents of Frederick Pace of ?Wales
(Note: Wales is used only as an identifier; this origin is not verified)
  4. PACES of unsure or unmatching lineage.
  5. UK PACES,
born in the United Kingdom or descended from more recent immigrants.

  6. GERMAN Paces,
who changed their name from Pees to Pace after arriving in the US.
  7. ITALIAN Paces. The Pace name seems to have originated independently in England and Italy.
  8. GROUP 3b

Donors who cited
John of Middlesex as ancestor

Kit #6281 J-Jr - John,John,William

NOTE:

This is a donor who seems to have a firm set of records leading to John of Middlesex, but the DNA says he is not related, nor does he match with any other Pace in the study.

Kit #6501 J-Jr - John,John,William

Comment:

Although the two individuals above cite common ancestry from William Pace on back - DNA results indicate that they are NOT related.

Kit #6379 J-Jo - John,Joseph,John

Note:

common ancestry to William Henry Pace with 35533 below.
See related 1907 letter from descendent Edward Pace 1837-1925.

Kit #35533 John,Joseph,John

Kit 48329 J-W

Kit 141809

Comment:

This kit is an exact 67/67 match with kit 48329 above and matches 37/37 and 25/25 with the modal (most common result) for the John of Middlesex group. This is not surprising due to the Goochland origins of the submitted lineage.

Kit 47737 JM Jr. - John,Joseph,John

[jhpacerd AT charter.net]

Kit No. 25581 John, Joseph, John

The above documented by personal research in early generations and by
Pace Society records in generations 5-8.

Kit #26406 - John,Joseph,John

Kit #9599 J-Jo - John,Joseph,John

Kit #7901 J-B - John,Benjamin,Benjamin

arden

Kit 10110 J-B

Note: The two Benjamin Paces above may be the same person, two wives, but this does not affect the descendency.

Kit 8749 J-W - John,William,John

Kit N5752

Kit 88920

NOTE:

Gordon Pace of Canada is NOT descended from John of Middlesex, but his DNA showed 25/25 match with a majority of John of M descendents.

This implies probable descent from a close relative of John, and it is likely that the common ancestor is no more than three generations before John. Click to see his descent from Shropshire/Staffordshire Paces.

This evidence plus naming similarities are strong evidence that John of Middlesex is descended from these Paces on the Welsh border, rather than from the London Paces of Richard Pace descent.

ID 68931 Pierce

Explanation:

This person from the Pierce surname study has a 25/25 match with most John of Middlesex Paces, and does not match with anyone in the Pierce study.  The names Pace and Pierce were often interchanged, especially in England, where the same person was listed as Pierce one time and Pace the next. The submitted lineage and other internet study by myself and the Pierce administrator leads us to doubt that he is a John of M descendent; however, the DNA match indicates a probable relationship back in England.

1. JEREMIAH PIERCE is thought to have been born in 1710 in Essex County, Virginia. (This is an unverified entry.)

2. ISAAC PIERCE was the only known child of Jeremiah Pierce and Elizabeth. He was born in Caroline County, Virginia after 1735. He was living in Orange County, Virginia on July 27, 1783 when he and his wife ANN deeded 100 acres of land to their son FRANCIS PIERCE. It is believed that he died in Orange County prior to 1791?

3. FRANCIS PIERCE

+ ELIZABETH LEWIS, daughter of James Lewis. (LEWIS name not verified) Born in Caroline County, Virginia and moved to Orange Co., Virginia when he was 10 years old.

After marriage, they moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina about 1784. In 1801 he sold his land then removed to Cumberland County, Kentucky (later named Clinton, County in 1837) where he had received a Land Grant for 200 acres of land near the Central Grove churchouse, on Spring Creek of the Wolf River and lived there until his death in 1853.

4. JOHN PIERCE (1789-1854)

He moved to CHRISTIAN County, Kentucky before 1818, south of Hopkinsville near Church Hill and bought a farm located one mile east of Hebron Church on what is now called the James Roy Cayce farm. This begins the family genealogy of the Pierce Family in Christian County which follows; he served as a Sergeant in the War of 1812, in the 20th Regiment of the U. S. Infantry from March 12,1812 to December 1, 1814.

He married SARAH (SALLY) ALLEN, on February 22, 1818

She was born in Alexandria, Virginia, daughter of HENRY ALLEN, Born: September 4, 1773, died: November 6, 1841 and Elizabeth Summers Allen. Born: 1782, Died: 1836 (buried in the Pioneer Graveyard in Hopkinsville, Ky).

The Pierce graveyard is located on the James Roy Cayce farm 1.2 miles east of Hebron Methodist Church and is registered with the State of Kentucky Historical Society.

5. GEORGE ROBIN PIERCE

+ He married ELVIRA MCCLAREN STEGER November 18, 1862.

The GEORGE ROBIN PIERCE family lived on the JOHN PIERCE homeplace 1.2 miles east of the Hebron Methodist Church, Christian County, Kentucky.

6. CHARLES LUCIAN PIERCE was born July 23, 1878. He married EDNA ASHTON ADAMS on February 11, 1911. He died April 9, 1958.

7. JAMES ADAMS PIERCE was born Dec 7, 1911. He married ELLEN MCCRAE on April 16, 1935. He died on February 20, 1999. This

This recent note from Brad Pierce, coordinator of the Pierce DNA project:

Actually, in a more extended version of that pedigree he began with this:

"The earliest pioneers in my family arrived in America in 1682 in Piscataway, New Jersey and others in Middlesex County, Virginia about

1684".

So somewhere in his family tradition, maybe verbal, is the notion that these Pierces started out in Middlesex Co. Va.  It is interesting that

several Middlesex Paces arein the same counties in Kentucky as this Pierce line in later generations.

Donors who cited one of the believed sons of
"Richard Pace II" as ancestor ("Richard III", James, or John)
(Red letters show common ancestors among donors)

NOTE:
Our DNA evidence has divided this group clearly into two sub-groups. At first, FTDNA thought they were not related, but with our persistent requests for a review, it was decided that they are indeed one group. However, there is a marked difference, with a difference of two in marker 6 and one in marker 21.

This indicates that one of the descendents of the patriarchal ancestor must have had a double mutation in one allele and a single mutation in the other. It is most unlikely that such a combination would occur twice; therefore, even though the DNA evidence contradicts some of the submitted lineages, it is likely that the DNA evidence is correct.

We feel Hardy's father is connected to the north GEORGIA Paces, where the name HARDY is prevalent, but have never been able to document a connection.

We hope this DNA project helps us finally find the rest of the family tree!!

Comment:

DNA results show this individual to have common ancestry with others who believe themselves descended from Richard II group 3a, so I have listed him under this heading.

Perfect 25 match of this donor and the one below is strong evidence of close relationship.

These two individuals are from the same line but disagree about the lineage from WILLIAM on back.

Group 3b

This group is distinguished from 3a by a two step difference in marker 26 and a single step difference in marker 21. Normally, this would indicate that they are not related, but FTDNA performed a careful analysis of other markers and has determined that they ARE related. The mutations must have occurred AFTER the common ancestor.

Donor 10683 submits a totally different ancestry chart citing a William Pace as son of Richard II Pace records do not indicate such a son.

It would be well to examine the documentation carefully.

This donor writes:

"My Grandfather was born Ernest Houston Pace in Huntsville, Texas @ 1906. At some point for reasons unknown to me his name changed to Roy Shannon."

This person has no evidence beyond this but DNA places him in Group 3, most likely Group 3b based on the DNA result at marker 385b (marker 6 on the chart

Notes

There is a difference of opinion among Jesse Pace submitters about Jesse's lineage back to John and Sarah Pace.  This page uses the opinion of the submitters for this category initially, until and unless hard evidence to the contrary can be found. Therefore, this designation has been changed to make Jesse the first proven ancestor.

Part of the controversy hinges on the wording of a deed of 1778 in which Thomas Pace sold some land. If a copy of that deed can be found and printed on this page, it might help to resolve the controversy.

Comment:

extended marker tests indicate that this donor could NOT be a descendent of John Pace/Ann Russell as he does not match other descendents of this union. This donor does not match with any others in the Pace study. This could mean that he is from a yet undiscovered Pace line, that there was an unreported adoption or illegitimacy, or that the lineage is inaccurate. Further study is needed.

This is an interesting submission
for two reasons.
  1. The first is a name change.
For personal reasons, James Madison Pace decided to use Madison as his last name. So the donor is a male Pace descendent although not named Pace.

  2. Secondly, he fits clearly into group 3b. Also, the mutation in marker 23 would seem to indicate a closer relationship to the other three in the chart with this mutation.

HOWEVER

note that marker 21 is consistent with group 3a, not 3b Two things could cause this:

  1. unique double mutation in this group might have occurred in two steps, rather than one -- one mutation in one generation, the next in a later one.

  2. A later mutation could have occurred reverting BACK to the original score in marker 23.

It will be interesting to follow future developments.

UNSURE or OTHER
Many Paces cannot trace their lines
back to these patriarchs

John of Middlesex Co VA
or Richard, John, or James
of North Carolina)

They are encouraged to submit their lineages to see if they match any of the other Pace lines.   They will be identified by kit number and by "unsure" or "Wales" (see explanation).   Their lineages will be traced as far back as they have them; perhaps Pace genealogists can help them to extend those lines.

Frederick Pace of ?Wales?

The DNA of this group of Paces does not match any of the others. Family tradition and strong evidence indicates that they are the descendents of a Frederick Pace, believed to be of Wales who came to this country with sons William, John, and Dempsey, in 1768. These Paces moved to Clarke County, Alabama, and then spread out from there. It should be noted that no record of this Frederick has been found, and that "Wales" could include parts of western England on the Welsh border, as Wales was never an independent country and had no definite border. There were Welsh speakers on both sides of the presently defined border of Wales, and the "border" of Wales was "fuzzy" and even wobbled back and forth at different times.

Comment:

Consistency in the matches of this line shows that it is a distinct Pace line and refutes the belief that they are descendents of John "the Tory" of the North Carolina/Richard line. 36/37 match between 11397 and 8025 would indicate that we have 36 markers of Frederick's DNA.

Evidence supporting
FREDERICK PACE of WALES

as ancestor of the Clarke County, Alabama, Paces,
father of

    WILLIAM (b. ca 1757)
    JOHN (b. ca 1760)
    and DEMPSEY (b. ca 1762)

Further information is found in the Clarke County, Alabama, Finding Aid, in the Pace Society Database available to Pace Society members,

1. The DEMPSEY PACE BIBLE
(can be found in the PSA database)

states that:

his parents were FREDERICK and ELIZABETH PACE.
This is the Dempsey Pace who died in Clarke Co, AL, in 1864.

2. The biography of WILLIAM PACE published in 1889 in "Biographical and Historical Memoirs of South Arkansas"

states that:

WILLIAM PACE...was born in Kentucky in 1807,
a son of JOHN and ELIZABETH PACE. The father [William’s father, John] was born in Wales about 1776*, a son of FREDERICK PACE who came to this country BEFORE the Revolutionary war. . . .
"  [WILLIAM was 13 or 14 years old when his father, JOHN, died in Clarke Co, AL, and probably heard this story from his father.]

3. The biography of Dr. J. M. Pace [Jesse, son of the above William] published in 1892 in "Memorial and Biographical History of Dallas" tells essentially the same story, but he also lists the other Clarke Co Paces (Dempsey and William) as sons of Frederick Pace.  ". . .  his great grandfather, Frederick Pace, was born in Wales and came to the United States in 1768, seven years before the Revolutionary War.  He was the father of five children, three sons and two daughters, all born in Wales.  William the eldest son,…was eleven years of age when he came to America,….John, the second son, and our subjects grandfather, was eight years of age....Dempsey, the third child of Frederick Pace, was six years of age. . . .”

4. The book A Glance into the Great Southeast, or Clarke County Alabama, and its Surroundings from 1650-1882” by Rev T.H. Ball.  He stated: [p. 522]  “John Pace, from South Carolina, after spending about a year in Kentucky and another in Tennessee, coming with Dempsey Pace, with a Parker family and some others, through the Chickasaw Indians, settled in 1809 about a mile and a half above Coffeeville…Dempsey Pace, named above, a brother, probably, of John Pace and a son of Frederick Pace of South Carolina, came in 1809.”

Rev. Ball was a native of Indiana who lived in Clarke Co during the 1850's during which time he started up and taught at West Bend Academy.  He married a girl from Clarke Co, and he visited there several times during the 1870's while collecting material for his history.  He would have had the opportunity to know the Paces of the area including Dempsey Pace and his descendents as well as "Aunt Patsy" Pace, the widow of Stephen Pace who was a son of John Pace (d. Clarke, 1820/21).

5. A paper written in 1885 by Fannie Pace Goodman who was a granddaughter of Dempsey Pace.  She stated “Dempsey Pace and John Pace, sons of Frederick Pace, left Virginia in 1790 and spent sometime in South Carolina, a year in Kentucky, one in Tennessee, coming through the Cherokee Indians County with other families…”

Bob Webb has analyzed this evidence and presents a very well reasoned perspective:

My goal is to put the different family traditions in perspective. I agree that the evidence does weigh in heavily that Frederick was Dempsey's father. I accept that without reservation. I'm still reluctant to say that Frederick was the immigrant ancestor of this line, but is rather the earliest known ancestor of the line. I'm still waffling on the idea that he was William and John's father. If not, he was certainly their brother. The math is shaky in Dr. Jesse Pace's account of the births of these men. We know he was off by about 13 years when he referred to Dempsey, the only one we have a decent birth year for (1775). Dr. Pace had Dempsey's birth year as 1762. He has John's birth date set at 1760 (Bruce Howard says 1761). I've often thought John was also younger than that.; closer to Dempsey in age, say 1773. John's wife Elizabeth was born about 1779-1780. When John died in 1821, he left a passel of young children, the youngest an infant. Was he 60 or in his late 40s? Dr. Pace contradicted himself when he said John died at the age of 40 of congestive chills (old medical terminology for malaria with diarrhea).

That memory must have been a very vivid and direct one for John's son William of Arkansas, who was 13 at the time. I lean towards the later birth date for John. You could almost shoe-horn him in as an adult son of Frederick listed in the South Carolina census of 1800. Certainly works for Dempsey. Does this leave a problem with your ancestor William? If William was much younger, he would have missed service in the Revolution, and I'm not about to challenge that. By Dr. Pace's reckoning, William was born in 1757. His war record says he served in 1779. How young could he have been? Bruce Howard estimated his birth year at 1759, which is acceptable. Dr. Pace says he was 17 when he enlisted , which would make his birth year at about 1761-62. Yet Dr.  Pace says he lived to be four score years, which is 80. We know William died in Clarke County in 1826. William must have been 64-69 at the time of his death. Probably seemed like four-score to his young nephew and namesake.

A note about the birthplace of JOHN and DEMPSEY. John's son RICHMOND states on the 1880 Newton County, Miss. census that his parents were born in South Carolina. RICHMOND's younger brother JESSE MERCER PACE also states that his parents were born in South Carolina. In that same census year in Clarke County, Alabama, Dempsey's children state that he was born in South Carolina. The consistency is compelling. T. H. Ball referred to John "from South Carolina" and "Frederick of South Carolina."

Evidence of the existence of a Frederick Pace in South Carolina . This material was submitted to the Pace mailing list by Kim Strachener Zapalac on 1-17-2010.

This may be the first mention of the progenitor, Frederick Pace of Wales.

For those who also have Frederick Paces in this time period, please do not rule out the possibility that the person mentioned in the newspaper article is not yours. However, I am basing this person on supposed son and daughter-in-law's, William and Drucilla Pace, residence in Chesterfield County, SC, on the 1800 census. William's own son, Frederick Pace is too young to be this man. Please feel free to make any comments.

"State of South-Carolina, Chesterfield district ss. [ss? - anyone know what this abbreviation stands for?]

At a court of General Sessions and Common Pleas, begun and holden for Chesterfield district, at Chesterfield court-house, on the fourth Monday in March, 1803, John Evans and Joel Norris, were duly returned summoned to appear and serve as Grand Ju-rors; and Isaac Course, Joseph J. Handcock, Christopher Vernon, Frederick Pace, Philip Hurst, Josiah Middleton, John Nicholson, German Berry, Nicholas Copeland and Hugh Blackeney, were duly returned summoned to appear and serve as petit and common plea jurors, who severally made default, and were noted for non-appearance.

Notice is hereby given, that unless the afore-said jurors shall shew [yes, this was the way it was spelled] good and sufficient cause of excuse, upon oath, to any of the Associate Judges of the said state, at the next sitting of the said court, on the fourth Monday in Octo-ber next, that they will severally and respect-ively be fined agreeably to law.

 By the Court,

 ALEXANDER CRAIG, Clerk,

Clerk's Office, 4th April, 1803."

Comment: Based on the dates given in the JM Pace biography above, Frederick would have been born in 1735 or before, allowing a year after his marriage before William was born and assuming he was at least 21 when he married, although earlier marriages were not uncommon. This Frederick would therefore have been at least in his 60s, possibly late 60s, in 1803, quite possibly the "Frederick Pace of Wales." At least we now have proof of a Frederick in the right time frame and in the right place.

This is as far back as anyone in our branch of the family has been able to trace our lineage. We've only been able to identify 2 sons of John and Abigail and could likely track down all their descendants. However, we've been unable to determine our relationship with any other Pace branches anywhere. Kit 60597--distant cousin, descends from John Pace b. 1784 and Abigail. 25/25 DNA match  supports accuracy of research.

The above lineage seems to have a problem.  John Pace would be 73 years old in 1893 when Ed Pace was born.

PACE-HENDRIX

Gordon W. Pace of Oregon
submitted the following information on this line:

From Gordon W Pace, 5-24-04

One of the major Pace lineages for which the ancestry is undiscovered, is that of William R. Pace and Sarah Hendrix of Giles Co, TN and Benton Co, AR. This is the ancestry of DNA test subject #15541 as well as the ancestry of James Dean Pace of Benton Co.
This is briefly what I know about this lineage:
William Pace was b. abt. 1770 in SC and died abt. 1825-30, probably in Maury Co, TN. He married Sarah Frazier abt. 1803 in Mississippi Territory, daughter of William Frazier and a Native American. Per Gale Judkins, family lore says that this family was closely associated with the Choctaw tribe in Mississippi Territory and Sarah may have been a full-blood Choctaw. The area of residence prior to the removal of the Choctaw was near what is now Yalobusha Co, MS. The family apparently arrived in TN before 1811.

Their children were:

  • Alpha Pace b. 1804, d. 1875 Giles Co, TN
    + m. John Escue Rachel Pace b. 1809

  • Thomas Pace b. 1811, d 1848 in Lawrence Co, TN

  • John Jackson b. 1815, d. aft 1870 Giles Co, TN
+ Mourning Logan 1850 Lawrence Co, TN

  • Dempsey b. 1818, d. aft 1880 AR
+ Sarah Cooper in Hardin Co, TN

  • William R. Pace
      b. 1836? Giles Co, TN
      d. aft 1890 Benton Co, AR.

  • Thomas Pace
+ Mary Hendrix 7/17/1833 in Lawrence Co, TN
daughter of William Hendrix and Sarah

Their children (Thomas & Mary) were:

    • James Dean Pace b. 1835 Giles Co, TN, d. aft 1880 AR
    • Christopher C. b. 1836 TN
    • Sarah E. b. 1840
    • Sophrona H. b. 1842
    • Robert Richmond b. 1844
    • Thomas J. b. 1845

WILLIAM R. PACE

- birth year from census records range from 1828 to 1836.
- On the 1880 Benton Co, AR census (Brightwater Twp) he shows both parents b. TN. William m. Sarah A. Hendrix (sister of above Mary) on 9/12/1849 in Lawrence Co, TN

Their children were:

  • William J.
  • John S.,
  • Martha Almyra,
  • Thomas E.,
  • General E.,
  • Mary A.,
  • Sarah
  • Rachel,
  • Susan Arphetty,
  • Fanny H.,
  • George M., and J
  • oseph H. b. 10/14/1871 Benton Co, AR.

The following children
were in the household of William R. on the 1880 census:

  • John S.,
  • Mary E., Sarah R.,
  • Fanny H., George M. and
  • Joseph H.

Also in the hh were

William Hendricks 35 and
James Hendricks 18,

relationship not noted
but undoubtedly close relatives of Sarah and Mary Hendrix.

Does anyone have a clue as to the ancestry of William Pace b. abt. 1770 SC? As the James Dean Pace biography indicates, his family believed him to be a descendant of Richard Pace of Jamestown

but the one DNA test from this line seems to refute this.
What is greatly needed is another test subject from this line to see if the results match the first.
Gordon W. Pace

    Donor's comment:

I think Joseph is the son of ALFRED H. PACE who was born in Surry Co. N.C. and married MILLY BRAY there on 9/21/1817, and died in Owen County, Indiana in early 1850's. ) There is speculation, but no proof that's come to my attention yet, that Alfred was the son of Edmund of the Richard Pace (of Jamestown) line, due to location of Edmund in Surry County.  The connection of Surry County N.C. and Owen Co. indiana seems like pretty good evidence that Alfred migrated from N.C. to Owen Co., Indiana with son, Joseph.  Joseph was raised and married there.

    Comment:

This donor does not match any other Paces in the database. The speculation does not seem to be accurate.

In addition to the mismatch, the predicted haplogroup for this donor is R1a, not found so far in any  other Pace. The Richard Pace descendents are R1b1. Here is a description of this haplogroup:

A subclade of R1, R1a is a Y-chromosome haplogroup found at high frequency (more than 40%) from the Czech Republic across to the Altai Mountains in Siberia and south throughout Central Asia.[1]

R1a arose 15,000 years ago in the vicinity of Ukraine, expanding from either the Ukrainian LGM refuge following the end of the last ice age, or from the Pontic-Caspian steppe as a result of the Kurgan migrations.[2][3][4]. But some studies question these earlier findings and claim that R1a lineages may have its origin in North India [5][6] [7]. The expansion of R1a has been associated with the spread of the Indo-European languages

The mismatch at DYS 390, a slow-changing allele, was especially significant in indicating a mismatch.

    GERMAN PACES

who derive their name from Pees. Explanation: in German, Pees would be pronounced almost exactly like Pace, the double e taking a sound like a long a.  Therefore, in the US it was natural for them to change the spelling to the American way. They are not related to the English Paces. This group has traced ancestry to Baumholder, Germany. It will be interesting to see if some of the undetermined lines of Paces. As of this date (Feb. 20o7) there are no matches. NOTE: Donor 47110's ancestors did NOT change their name to Pace but the evidence shows they are related going back to Baumholder, Germany.

    Comment:

DNA match of 24/25 with 20553 indicates probable relationship despite lack of common records.

This entry is from a person surnamed Smith who did not match with anyone in the Smith study

but who did match with our German Pees-Pace entry. He is exploring the possibility of a name change somewhere in his ancestry and thinks he might be a Pees-Pace.

Marker 23 has changed from 14 to 12 compared to donor 20553 who is a German Pace/Pees donor. This is a fast moving marker. The two step difference in this allele makes the administrator a bit skeptical but it is certainly possible.

    Italian Paces

The Pace name seems to have two distinct origins:  England and Italy.  It appears from the evidence that the name evolved separately in these two locations and the DNA evidence so far would indicate that English and Italian Paces are not related.   In both cases, there seems to be some relation of the Pace name to the word "peace" and in fact, in Italian, Pace (pronounced "pah-chee") means peace. The Pace DNA project is interested also in Italian Paces and would like more submissions.
