Continued lineage, thanks to several nice Paces on the Pace
mailing list:
6. JESSE H PACE listed in 1860 Fluvanna census as "carpenter" age 37
with wife Martha and son John H, 6, and in 1870 census with son John H 16, both
listed as "cooper" (barrel maker). Age of John H is consistent with John
Hartwell above.
There is a JOHN R PACE, listed in Fluvanna 1870 age 62 census as "cooper", wife
Elizabeth age 56 , possibly related but too young to be parents of Jesse. Jesse
is listed in that census as age 45. That would make John just 17 and Elizabeth
11 when Jesse was born.
NOTE:
Gordon Pace of Canada is NOT descended from John of Middlesex, but his DNA showed 25/25 match with a majority of John of M descendents. This implies probable descent from a close relative of John, and it is likely that the common ancestor is no more than three generations before John. Click to see his descent from Shropshire/Staffordshire Paces. This evidence plus naming similarities are strong evidence that John of M is descended from these Paces on the Welsh border, rather than from the London Paces of Richard Pace descent.
Explanation: This person from the Pierce surname study has a 25/25 match with most John of Middlesex Paces, and does not match with anyone in the Pierce study. The names Pace and Pierce were often interchanged, especially in England, where the same person was listed as Pierce one time and Pace the next. The submitted lineage and other internet study by myself and the Pierce administrator leads us to doubt that he is a John of M descendent; however, the DNA match indicates a probable relationship back in England.
1. JEREMIAH PIERCE is thought to have been born in 1710 in Essex County,
Virginia. (This is an unverified entry.)
2. ISAAC PIERCE was the only known child of Jeremiah Pierce and Elizabeth. He
was born in Caroline County, Virginia after 1735. He was living in Orange
County, Virginia on July 27, 1783 when he and his wife ANN deeded 100 acres of
land to their son FRANCIS PIERCE. It is believed that he died in Orange County
prior to 1791?
3. FRANCIS PIERCE (Aug. 1760-Feb. 22, 1853) married about 1782 ELIZABETH LEWIS,
daughter of James Lewis. (LEWIS name not verified) Born in Caroline County,
Virginia and moved to Orange Co., Virginia when he was 10 years old. After
marriage, they moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina about 1784. In 1801 he
sold his land then removed to Cumberland County, Kentucky (later named Clinton,
County in 1837) where he had received a Land Grant for 200 acres of land near
the Central Grove churchouse, on Spring Creek of the Wolf River and lived there
until his death in 1853.
4. JOHN PIERCE (1789-1854) He was born October 11, 1789 on a farm on Kings
Creek, Wilkes County, North Carolina and moved with his parents to Cumberland
(Clinton) County, Kentucky about 1801. He moved to Christian County, Kentucky
before 1818, south of Hopkinsville near Church Hill and bought a farm located
one mile east of Hebron Church on what is now called the James Roy Cayce farm.
This begins the family genealogy of the Pierce Family in Christian County which
follows; he served as a Sergeant in the War of 1812, in the 20th Regiment of the
U. S. Infantry from March 12,1812 to December 1, 1814. He married SARAH (SALLY)
ALLEN, on February 22, 1818, born: January 8, 1799 and died: December 29, 1878,
She was born in Alexandria, Virginia, daughter of Henry Allen, Born: September
4, 1773, died: November 6, 1841 and Elizabeth Summers Allen. Born: 1782, Died:
1836 (burried in the Pioneer Graveyard in Hopkinsville, Ky). The Pierce
graveyard is located on the James Roy Cayce farm 1.2 miles east of Hebron
Methodist Church and is registered with the State of Kentucky Historical
Society.
5. GEORGE ROBIN PIERCE was born January 10, 1836. He married ELVIRA MCCLAREN
STEGER on November 18, 1862. He died Aug 19, 1919. The GEORGE ROBIN PIERCE
family lived on the JOHN PIERCE homeplace 1.2 miles east of the Hebron Methodist
Church, Christian County, Kentucky.
6. CHARLES LUCIAN PIERCE was born July 23, 1878. He married EDNA ASHTON ADAMS on
February 11, 1911. He died April 9, 1958.
7. JAMES ADAMS PIERCE was born Dec 7, 1911. He married ELLEN MCCRAE on April 16,
1935. He died on February 20, 1999.
Group 3a:
NOTE:
Our DNA evidence has divided this group clearly into two sub-groups. At first, FTDNA thought they were not related, but with our persistent requests for a review, it was decided that they are indeed one group. However, there is a marked difference, with a difference of two in marker 6 and one in marker 21.This indicates that one of the descendents of the patriarchal ancestor must have had a double mutation in one allele and a single mutation in the other. It is most unlikely that such a combination would occur twice; therefore, even though the DNA evidence contradicts some of the submitted lineages, it is likely that the DNA evidence is correct.
but DNA shows common ancestry with this group (3a)

Most donors in this group Group 3b
- cited John Pace/Sarah ?Burge/Burgh? as ancestors.
- Several others seem related to this group.
- This would imply a common ancestor
- (not necessarily John--
- could be further back than John)
Explanation:
John Pace was born probably before 1732 in Prince George County, VA.Bruce Howard believes him to be the son of Richard and Sarah Pace, and that Richard was a son of John Pace, in turn the son of "Richard Pace II
This group is distinguished from 3a by a two step difference in marker 26 and a single step difference in marker 21. Normally, this would indicate that they are not related, but FTDNA performed a careful analysis of other markers and has determined that they ARE related. The mutations must have occurred AFTER the common ancestor (Richard of North Carolina).
Donor 10683 submits a totally different ancestry chart citing a William Pace as son of Richard II Pace records do not indicate such a son.
It would be well to examine the documentation carefully.
(NOTE: It has not been documented that John's wife was a Burgh/Burge (it has been spelled both ways). Bruce Howard believes she was a Burgh/Burge but does not offer documentation in his book.)
Most recent common ancestor since John (as per submitted lineage) shown in red.

Notes
There is a difference of opinion among Jesse Pace submitters about Jesse's lineage back to John and Sarah Pace. This page uses the opinion of the submitters for this category initially, until and unless hard evidence to the contrary can be found. Therefore, this designation has been changed to make Jesse the first proven ancestor.
Part of the controversy hinges on the wording of a deed of 1778 in which Thomas Pace sold some land. If a copy of that deed can be found and printed on this page, it might help to resolve the controversy.

For personal reasons, James Madison Pace

So the donor is a male Pace descendent
although not named Pace.
- Secondly, he fits clearly into group 3b,
the group that seems to be descended from or related to
John Pace/Sarah ?Burgh?.
Also, the mutation in marker 23 would seem to indicate
a closer relationship to the other three in the chart
with this mutation.HOWEVER note that marker 21 is consistent with group 3a, not 3b Two things could cause this:
- unique double mutation in this group might have occurred in two steps, rather than one
-- one mutation in one generation, the next in a later one.
- A later mutation could have occurred reverting BACK to
the original score in marker 23.
It will be interesting
to follow future developments.

This person does not seem to be related to the others who cite lineage to John Pace-Sarah Burgh
This person, of an entirely different surname and no known Pace
ancestry, matches 12/12 with 7840
Research is indicated on his part to determine whether a Pace ancestor is possible.
They are encouraged to submit their lineages to see if they match any of the other Pace lines. They will be identified by kit number and by "unsure" or "Wales" (see explanation). Their lineages will be traced as far back as they have them; perhaps Pace genealogists can help them to extend those lines.
The DNA of this group of Paces does not match any of the others. Family tradition and strong evidence indicates that they are the descendents of a Frederick Pace, believed to be of Wales who came to this country with sons William, John, and Dempsey, in 1768. These Paces moved to Clarke County, Alabama, and then spread out from there. It should be noted that no record of this Frederick has been found, and that "Wales" could include parts of western England on the Welsh border, as Wales was never an independent country and had no definite border. There were Welsh speakers on both sides of the presently defined border of Wales, and the "border" of Wales was "fuzzy" and even wobbled back and forth at different times.

Comment: Consistency
in the matches of this line shows that it is a distinct Pace line and refutes
the belief that they are descendents of John "the Tory" of the North
Carolina/Richard line. 36/37 match between 11397 and 8025 would indicate that we
have 36 markers of Frederick's DNA.

Gordon W. Pace of Oregon submitted the following information on this line:
From Gordon W Pace, 5-24-04
One of the major Pace lineages for which the ancestry is undiscovered, is
that of William R. Pace and Sarah Hendrix of Giles Co, TN and Benton Co, AR.
This is the ancestry of DNA test subject #15541 as well as the ancestry of James
Dean Pace of Benton Co.
This is briefly what I know about this lineage:
William Pace was b. abt. 1770 in SC and died abt. 1825-30, probably in Maury
Co, TN. He married Sarah Frazier abt. 1803 in Mississippi Territory, daughter
of William Frazier and a Native American. Per Gale Judkins, family lore says
that this family was closely associated with the Choctaw tribe in Mississippi
Territory and Sarah may have been a full-blood Choctaw. The area of
residence prior to the removal of the Choctaw was near what is now Yalobusha Co,
MS.
The family apparently arrived in TN before 1811.
Their children were: Alpha Pace b. 1804, d. 1875 Giles Co, TN, m. John Escue
Rachel Pace b. 1809,
Thomas Pace b. 1811, d 1848 in Lawrence Co, TN,
John Jackson b. 1815, d. aft 1870 Giles Co, TN, m. Mourning Logan 1850
Lawrence Co, TN,
Dempsey b. 1818, d. aft 1880 AR, m. Sarah Cooper in Hardin Co, TN. William R.
Pace b. 1836? Giles Co, TN, d. aft 1890 Benton Co, AR.
Thomas Pace m. Mary Hendrix 7/17/1833 in Lawrence Co, TN, daughter of William
Hendrix and Sarah. Their children were:
James Dean Pace b. 1835 Giles Co, TN, d. aft 1880 AR Christopher C. b. 1836 TN
Sarah E. b. 1840 Sophrona H. b. 1842 Robert Richmond b. 1844 Thomas J. b. 1845
William R. Pace - birth year from census records range from 1828 to 1836. On
the 1880 Benton Co, AR census (Brightwater Twp) he shows both parents b. TN.
William m. Sarah A. Hendrix (sister of above Mary) on 9/12/1849 in Lawrence
Co, TN. Their children were:
William J. , John S., Martha Almyra, Thomas E., General E., Mary A., Sarah
Rachel, Susan Arphetty, Fanny H., George M., and Joseph H. b. 10/14/1871 Benton
Co, AR.
The following children were in the household of William R. on the 1880
census: John S., Mary E., Sarah R., Fanny H., George M. and Joseph H. Also in
the
hh were William Hendricks 35 and James Hendricks 18, relationship not noted
but undoubtedly close relatives of Sarah and Mary Hendrix.
Does anyone have a clue as to the ancestry of William Pace b. abt. 1770 SC? As
the James Dean Pace biography indicates, his family believed him to be a
descendant of Richard Pace of Jamestown but the one DNA test from this line
seems to refute this.
What is greatly needed is another test subject from this line to see if the
results match the first.

who derive their name from Pees. Explanation: in German, Pees would be pronounced almost exactly like Pace, the double e taking a sound like a long a. Therefore, in the US it was natural for them to change the spelling to the American way. They are not related to the English Paces. This group has traced ancestry to Baumholder, Germany. It will be interesting to see if some of the undetermined lines of Paces. As of this date (Feb. 20o7) there are no matches. This entry is from a person surnamed Smith who did not match with anyone in the Smith study but who did match with our German Pees-Pace entry. He is exploring the possibility of a name change somewhere in his ancestry and thinks he might be a Pees-Pace. Marker 23 has changed from 14 to 12 when compared to donor 20553 who is a German Pace/Pees donor. This is a fast moving marker. The two step difference in this allele makes the administrator a bit skeptical, but it is certainly possible. |
Italian Paces
The Pace name seems to have two distinct origins: England and Italy. It appears from the evidence that the name evolved separately in these two locations and the DNA evidence so far would indicate that English and Italian Paces are not related. In both cases, there seems to be some relation of the Pace name to the word "peace" and in fact, in Italian, Pace (pronounced "pah-chee") means peace. The Pace DNA project is interested also in Italian Paces and would like more submissions.

Evidence supporting Frederick Pace of Wales as ancestor of the Clarke County, Alabama, Paces, father of William (b. ca 1757), John (b. ca 1760), and Dempsey (b. ca 1762).
Further information is found in the Clarke County, Alabama, Finding Aid, in the Pace Society Database, available to Pace Society members,
1. The Dempsey Pace Bible (can be found in the PSA database) states that his parents were Frederick and Elizabeth Pace. This is the Dempsey Pace who died in Clarke Co, AL, in 1864.
2. The biography of William Pace published in 1889 in "Biographical and Historical Memoirs of South Arkansas" states that "William Pace...was born in Kentucky in 1807, a son of John and Elizabeth Pace. The father [William’s father, John] was born in Wales about 176*, a son of Frederick Pace who came to this country before the Revolutionary war. . . ." [William was 13 or 14 years old when his father, John, died in Clarke Co, AL, and probably heard this story from his father.]
3. The biography of Dr. J. M. Pace [Jesse, son of the above William] published in 1892 in "Memorial and Biographical History of Dallas" tells essentially the same story, but he also lists the other Clarke Co Paces (Dempsey and William) as sons of Frederick Pace. ". . . his great grandfather, Frederick Pace, was born in Wales and came to the United States in 1768, seven years before the Revolutionary War. He was the father of five children, three sons and two daughters, all born in Wales. William the eldest son,…was eleven years of age when he came to America,….John, the second son, and our subjects grandfather, was eight years of age....Dempsey, the third child of Frederick Pace, was six years of age. . . .”
4.
The book A Glance into the Great Southeast, or Clarke County Alabama,
and its Surroundings from 1650-1882” by Rev T.H. Ball. He stated: [p. 522]
“John Pace, from South Carolina, after spending about a year in Kentucky and
another in Tennessee, coming with Dempsey Pace, with a Parker family and some
others, through the Chickasaw Indians, settled in 1809 about a mile and a half
above Coffeeville…Dempsey Pace, named above, a brother, probably, of John Pace
and a son of Frederick Pace of South Carolina, came in 1809.”
Rev. Ball was a native of Indiana who lived in Clarke Co during the 1850's
during which time he started up and taught at West Bend Academy. He married a
girl from Clarke Co, and he visited there several times during the 1870's while
collecting material for his history. He would have had the opportunity to know
the Paces of the area including Dempsey Pace and his descendents as well as
"Aunt Patsy" Pace, the widow of Stephen Pace who was a son of John Pace (d.
Clarke, 1820/21).
5. ) A paper written in 1885 by Fannie Pace Goodman who was a granddaughter of Dempsey Pace. She stated “Dempsey Pace and John Pace, sons of Frederick Pace, left Virginia in 1790 and spent sometime in South Carolina, a year in Kentucky, one in Tennessee, coming through the Cherokee Indians County with other families…”
Bob Webb has analyzed this evidence and presents a very well reasoned perspective:
My goal is to put the different family traditions in perspective. I agree that the evidence does weigh in heavily that Frederick was Dempsey's father. I accept that without reservation. I'm still reluctant to say that Frederick was the immigrant ancestor of this line, but is rather the earliest known ancestor of the line. I'm still waffling on the idea that he was William and John's father. If not, he was certainly their brother. The math is shaky in Dr. Jesse Pace's account of the births of these men. We know he was off by about 13 years when he referred to Dempsey, the only one we have a decent birth year for (1775). Dr. Pace had Dempsey's birth year as 1762. He has John's birth date set at 1760 (Bruce Howard says 1761). I've often thought John was also younger than that.; closer to Dempsey in age, say 1773. John's wife Elizabeth was born about 1779-1780. When John died in 1821, he left a passel of young children, the youngest an infant. Was he 60 or in his late 40s? Dr. Pace contradicted himself when he said John died at the age of 40 of congestive chills (old medical terminology for malaria with diarrhea).
That memory must have been a very vivid and direct one for John's son William of Arkansas, who was 13 at the time. I lean towards the later birth date for John. You could almost shoe-horn him in as an adult son of Frederick listed in the South Carolina census of 1800. Certainly works for Dempsey. Does this leave a problem with your ancestor William? If William was much younger, he would have missed service in the Revolution, and I'm not about to challenge that. By Dr. Pace's reckoning, William was born in 1757. His war record says he served in 1779. How young could he have been? Bruce Howard estimated his birth year at 1759, which is acceptable. Dr. Pace says he was 17 when he enlisted , which would make his birth year at about 1761-62. Yet Dr. Pace says he lived to be four score years, which is 80. We know William died in Clarke County in 1826. William must have been 64-69 at the time of his death. Probably seemed like four-score to his young nephew and namesake.
A note about the birthplace of John and Dempsey. John's son Richmond states on the 1880 Newton County, Miss. census that his parents were born in South Carolina. Richmond's younger brother Jesse Mercer Pace also states that his parents were born in South Carolina. In that same census year in Clarke County, Alabama, Dempsey's children state that he was born in South Carolina. The consistency is compelling. T. H. Ball referred to John "from South Carolina" and "Frederick of South Carolina."
